A 20x50 storage unit is 1,000 square feet: 20 feet wide by 50 feet deep. That's about the size of a four-car garage, or a small two-bedroom house. Cubic feet depends on the ceiling: 8,000 with an 8-foot ceiling, or 16,000 cubic feet with the 16-foot ceilings at Elite.

Very few storage facilities build anything this large. A 20x50 is RV-and-fleet territory, the size you look for when a motorhome, a fifth wheel, several vehicles or a whole household plus vehicles all need to go under one roof. Here's what the space gives you.

How many square feet is a 20x50?

1,000 square feet: 20 times 50. That's five 10x20 units' worth of floor, or a 20x30 plus a 20x20 put end to end.

How many cubic feet is a 20x50 storage unit?

Ceiling heightCubic feet
8 feet8,000 cubic feet
10 feet10,000 cubic feet
12 feet12,000 cubic feet
16 feet (Elite)16,000 cubic feet

The ceiling is the reason cubic feet matters. With 16 feet of height, pallet racking or tall shelving can double what the floor holds. At Elite, freestanding shelving and racking are fine, and anything bolted to the floor or wall needs owner approval first.

What fits in a 20x50 storage unit?

  • A large RV. A Class A motorhome, fifth wheel or toy hauler up to roughly 40 to 45 feet overall, provided it clears the door. Measure the full length including the hitch or ladder, and the height including the roof A/C. Elite accommodates RVs up to 45 feet in units long enough to take them.
  • Four cars. Two rows of two, side by side, with room to open doors in the front row.
  • A truck and a boat, or an RV and a car. A tow vehicle with its trailer behind it, or a motorhome with a car parked alongside the front half. See boat storage in Bakersfield.
  • A work fleet. A couple of service trucks plus equipment, or a box truck with room to stage inventory. See box truck storage.
  • A whole house and then some. A five-bedroom home's contents with aisles left in, or a house plus the vehicles. See what size unit a 5-bedroom house needs.

Will my RV clear the door?

For most rigs, the door matters more than the length. Elite's units have 12 x 12 roll-up doors on most units and 14 x 14 on some. Travel trailers and many Class C motorhomes clear 12 feet. Fifth wheels, toy haulers and Class A coaches often stand 12.5 to 13.5 feet with the A/C on top, which means you need a 14-foot door. If your rig is over about 11.5 feet tall, tell the office when you reserve so you're placed in a unit with the taller door.

What a 20x50 at Elite comes with

  • Fully enclosed, insulated unit (R30 ceiling, R19 walls). Insulated, not climate controlled. Here's the difference.
  • 16-foot ceilings and a 3 x 7 man door beside the roll-up
  • Concrete floor, fluorescent lighting and 120-volt outlets
  • Drive-up access off concrete drive aisles about 60 feet wide, so long rigs can swing in
  • A free RV dump station on site
  • Fenced, gated property with your own four-digit code, 34 recording cameras and an after-hours entrance alarm
  • Gate open 5 AM to midnight; month-to-month terms

How a 20x50 compares to other sizes

SizeSquare feetRoughly holds
10x30300 sq ftOne vehicle, or a 3-bedroom house
20x30600 sq ftTwo cars, or a trailer up to about 27 feet
20x40800 sq ftTwo cars plus a boat, or an RV in the mid-30-foot range
20x501,000 sq ftAn RV up to about 45 feet, or four cars

Elite doesn't rent a 20x40, so the usual move is from a 20x30 straight to a 20x50. If you need more room than that, Elite also has longer units, up to 2,220 square feet, including drive-through units you can pull straight through. See large storage units in Bakersfield.

Frequently asked questions about 20x50 storage units

How big is a 20x50 storage unit?

20 feet wide by 50 feet deep, or 1,000 square feet. With Elite's 16-foot ceilings, that's 16,000 cubic feet.

Can a 40-foot RV fit in a 20x50 storage unit?

Usually, yes, as long as it clears the door height. A 40-foot coach leaves several feet of length to spare. Measure bumper to bumper, including ladders and hitches.

How many cars fit in a 20x50?

Four, parked two side by side in two rows, with room to get in and out of the front pair.

Is a 20x50 bigger than a garage?

It's bigger than most residential garages. A typical two-car garage is about 400 to 500 square feet, so a 20x50 is roughly double that.

Is a 20x50 storage unit climate controlled?

At Elite, no. Units are insulated (R30 ceiling, R19 walls), which keeps them much cooler than an uninsulated metal building in a Bakersfield summer, but there's no heating or cooling system.

Can I run a business out of a 20x50?

You can store business inventory, equipment and vehicles, and minor work inside the unit is allowed. Retail sales and work on vehicles are not. Can you run a business out of a storage unit covers the details.
