A 20x30 storage unit is 600 square feet — 20 feet wide by 30 feet deep. That's about the size of a three-car garage, and twice the floor of a 10x30, the biggest size most self-storage facilities carry. Cubic feet depends on the ceiling: 4,800 with an 8-foot ceiling, or 9,600 cubic feet with the 16-foot ceilings at Elite.
Most self-storage sites don't build 20x30s, so this size usually shows up at facilities designed for vehicles and larger loads. Here's what the space actually gives you.
| Width | 20 feet (240 inches) |
| Depth | 30 feet (360 inches) |
| Floor area | 600 square feet |
| Ceiling height at Elite | 16 feet |
| Cubic feet at Elite | 9,600 cubic feet |
| Roll-up door at Elite | 12 x 12 feet on most units, 14 x 14 on some |
| Closest everyday comparison | A three-car garage |
600 square feet: 20 times 30. For a sense of scale, that's three 10x20 units, or a small one-bedroom apartment.
| Ceiling height | Cubic feet |
| 8 feet | 4,800 cubic feet |
| 10 feet | 6,000 cubic feet |
| 12 feet | 7,200 cubic feet |
| 16 feet (Elite) | 9,600 cubic feet |
The ceiling matters more than people expect. A 16-foot ceiling doubles what an 8-foot one holds on the same floor, which is the difference between storing a house and storing a house plus everything in its garage.
At Elite, the 20x30 is our smallest unit, and it's built the same as our largest:
| Unit size | Square feet | Roughly holds |
| 10x30 | 300 sq ft | A four- to five-bedroom home, or a car plus boxes |
| 20x20 | 400 sq ft | Two cars side by side, or a large house |
| 20x30 | 600 sq ft | Two cars plus gear, a camper or boat, or a whole house with aisles |
| 20x40 | 800 sq ft | Two cars plus a boat, or an RV in the mid-30-foot range |
| 20x50 | 1,000 sq ft | A large RV, or several vehicles |
If you're storing a motorhome or fifth wheel over about 27 feet, or more than two vehicles, size up. Elite's units run from 600 to 2,220 square feet, all 20 feet wide, and can take RVs up to 45 feet in the longer units. See how big a 20x40 is or large storage units in Bakersfield. 20 feet wide by 30 feet deep, or 600 square feet. With Elite's 16-foot ceilings, that's 9,600 cubic feet.
Two, side by side, with space behind them for gear. Three standard cars won't fit comfortably, because the 30-foot depth isn't enough to park two in a row.
A smaller one can. Travel trailers and Class B or C motorhomes up to roughly 26 to 27 feet overall fit, provided they clear the door height. Measure the full length including the hitch, and the height including the A/C unit on the roof.
It's in the same range. Three-car garages usually run 600 to 900 square feet; a 20x30 is the compact end of that.
At Elite, no. The units are insulated (R30 ceiling, R19 walls), which keeps them much cooler than an uninsulated metal unit in a Bakersfield summer, but there's no heating or cooling system.
Minor work inside the unit is allowed at Elite, but no work on vehicles of any kind, no fluids, and no retail sales to the public.
