Bakersfield Storage Facilities Compared: Which Kind Actually Fits What You Have

Almost everyone starts the same way. You type “storage units near me,” you get a map of the big names, you pick whichever one is closest, and you find out later that the unit you rented is not really built for the thing you put in it.

That happens because storage is not one product. There are four distinct kinds of it in Bakersfield, they are built for genuinely different jobs, and only one of them advertises hard enough that most people know it exists. Here is the whole landscape, honestly — including where Elite is the wrong answer.

The four kinds of storage you can rent in Bakersfield

Type Typical size Built for Where it runs out
Big-box self storage 5x5 up to about 10x30 Household overflow, a move, furniture, boxes, seasonal decorations Anything tall, anything on wheels, anything you need to work on or receive deliveries into
Open-lot vehicle parking A marked space, often 10x30 to 12x45 Getting an RV, boat or trailer off the driveway at the lowest possible cost Sun, dust and weather reach the vehicle exactly as they would at home
Enclosed warehouse-class units Roughly 600 to 2,300 sq ft Vehicles you care about, fleets and equipment, business inventory, anything needing real floor space Far more space than a few boxes need — the wrong tool for household overflow
Leased commercial warehouse Usually 2,500 sq ft and up An established operation with staff, a dock and predictable long-term volume Multi-year commitment, deposits and triple-net charges on top of base rent

Start with what you are storing, not with what is closest

Distance is the wrong first question. It is the right second one. Sort yourself by the contents first:

  • Boxes, furniture, a household in transition. Rent a locker near your house. This is what big-box self storage is genuinely good at, the sizes are right, and driving across town for it would be silly. Elite does not rent 10x10s, and you should not want us to.
  • A vehicle you are content to leave outside. An open lot solves the parking problem and the HOA letter for the least money. That is a legitimate choice, and for an older work trailer it is often the correct one.
  • A vehicle you actually care about. A boat, a motorhome, a fifth wheel, a classic or a second car. Here the difference between enclosed and uncovered is the whole decision, and Valley sun is the reason — see oversized vehicle storage or, for collector cars, luxury garage storage.
  • A business that has outgrown the garage. Inventory, tools, a work van and a trailer, somewhere to receive and stage. You need square footage and a door a pallet fits through, which is warehouse-class storage.
  • An operation with staff and a forklift, growing predictably. Lease a warehouse. We wrote up what that actually costs in Bakersfield, including the charges that land on top of the advertised rate.

The five questions that separate facilities once you know your category

Within a category, marketing language converges fast and every facility sounds the same. These five questions produce different answers:

  • Can you drive to your own door? Drive-up ground-level access versus a corridor, a shared cart and an elevator. This matters enormously for anything heavy or frequent, and not at all for a dozen boxes you will touch twice.
  • How big is the opening, really? Ask for the door dimensions, not the unit dimensions. A wake tower, a rooftop A/C unit, a raised truck or a forklift all get stopped by a door, not by a floor. Elite runs fourteen-by-fourteen roll-up doors under sixteen-foot ceilings.
  • Insulated, climate controlled, or neither? These are three different things and get used interchangeably. Climate control means active heating and cooling, which matters for documents, electronics and instruments. An insulated envelope — Elite is R30 ceiling and R19 walls — is what keeps Valley heat off a hull, a gelcoat, a dashboard or palletized stock. An uninsulated metal shell in the sun is neither.
  • What does the security actually consist of? “Secure facility” is not a specification. Ask what the fencing is, how gate access is controlled, whether cameras are recording in HD, whether the drives are lit at night, whether there are fire sprinklers, and whether units have a man-door as well as a roll-up.
  • How long are you committed? Month-to-month versus a term lease. If the need is seasonal or you are not sure yet how much space you need, that flexibility is worth real money.

Where Elite fits, and where it does not

Elite RV & Storage sits in the third category and only the third category. Every unit is enclosed, insulated and drive-up, running roughly 600 to 2,300 square feet with sixteen-foot ceilings, fourteen-by-fourteen roll-up doors and sixty-foot drive aisles, with several drive-through units. The property is fully fenced and gated with digital access control, HD cameras, LED lighting and fire sprinklers, and terms are month to month.

What that means in practice: if you are storing a household, we are not your answer and a locker closer to home will serve you better. If you are storing a boat, a motorhome, a collection, a fleet or a business, the things that make a locker cheap — small footprint, narrow door, shared corridor — are exactly the things that will make it useless to you, and this is the category to be shopping in.

Not sure which side of that line you are on? The storage size calculator takes about a minute, and if you are specifically working out vehicle dimensions, what size storage unit fits a car walks through the measurements.

Frequently asked questions

What types of storage facilities are there in Bakersfield?

Four: big-box self storage lockers from about 5x5 to 10x30, open-lot vehicle parking spaces, enclosed warehouse-class units from roughly 600 to 2,300 square feet, and full commercial warehouse leases starting around 2,500 square feet. Most people only ever see the first because it advertises the hardest.

What is the difference between a storage unit and warehouse storage?

Scale and access. A storage unit is sized for possessions and reached through a corridor or a standard roll-up door. Warehouse-class storage is sized for operations — hundreds to a couple of thousand square feet, a door wide and tall enough for a forklift or an RV, ceilings you can rack vertically, and aisles a truck can maneuver in.

Is climate controlled storage worth it in Bakersfield?

It depends entirely on the contents. For paper, electronics, artwork and wooden instruments, active climate control is worth paying for. For vehicles, equipment and most inventory, what does the real work is being enclosed, shaded and insulated, out of direct sun and blowing dust. Elite is insulated rather than climate controlled, which suits the vehicles and business stock our units are built around.

How do I compare storage facilities fairly?

Decide your category first, then compare within it on five things: drive-up access, actual door dimensions, insulation or climate control, the specifics behind the word secure, and how long you are committed. Comparing a locker to a warehouse-class unit on price per month tells you nothing useful, because they are not doing the same job.

Does Elite rent small storage units?

No. The smallest units run around 600 square feet, which is roughly the footprint of a two-car garage. For boxes and furniture, a standard self-storage locker nearer to home is the better and cheaper answer.

Can I switch to a bigger unit later?

Usually, and tenants do it regularly — it is one of the practical advantages of month-to-month terms. Ask what is open nearby when you reserve, so there is room to expand next to you rather than across the property.

Shopping the right category is most of the decision

If you have worked out that you need enclosed, warehouse-class space, Elite RV & Storage is at 8700 Scobee Street, by the Walmart on Gosford between White Lane and Panama Lane — roughly five to ten minutes from southwest Bakersfield and a straight run down Gosford from Rosedale and the northwest. The full specification is on the warehouse storage page, and west-side businesses can read the west Bakersfield version.
