Why Q4 breaks the space you were getting by with

Most small sellers run lean the rest of the year. A garage, a back room, a corner of the shop. That works at normal volume. Then Q4 stacks four things on top of each other at once:

• You buy deeper than usual. Holiday buying means committing to quantities you would never carry in April, often on a single delivery.
• Freight consolidates. Suppliers ship earlier and larger to beat their own cutoffs, so stock that would normally trickle in arrives in one drop.
• Packing takes over. Pick, pack, kit and label needs floor space, not just shelf space — a table, a rolling cart, and room to stage outbound.
• Then January arrives. Returns come back through the same door the outbound went out of, and they need somewhere to sit while they are inspected and restocked.

A garage can absorb one of those. It rarely absorbs all four.

• Leave a working bay. Set aside a clear area for packing and staging outbound. Sellers consistently underestimate this and end up working in the aisle.

Not all storage handles inventory well. The things that matter for a Q4 operation:

• Drive-up, ground-level access. If a freight delivery cannot pull to your door, you are hand-trucking a pallet through a corridor. Skip anything with an elevator between you and your stock.
• A door big enough for a pallet jack or forklift. Fourteen-foot roll-up doors take a forklift straight in; a standard roll-up does not.
• Ceiling height. Vertical space is the cheapest space you will buy. Sixteen feet is the difference between one layer of pallets and four.
